England defeats USA 2-0. Terry smiles again.

May 31

England had a 2-0 victory over USA in the football friendly. A well timed header flicked by Captain John Terry and a beautiful strike by man-of-the-match Steve Gerard sealed the victory for England.

While England played well and deserved to win, their performance was nothing short of ‘regular’ to say the least. This might be due to the two big leagues just getting over and the players finally taking it easy. However, their do have time to rest, now that their competitive season will begin only in September. If in case you forgot, England didn’t qualify for the Euro 2008 Championship.

One important happening of this result was Terry smiling again after his depressed state on missing the decision making penalty shot at the Champions League which cost Chelsea the trophy. Terry admitted his goal was perfectly timed to lift his Russian blues: “That goal was for all the Chelsea fans for last week,” he said.

Coach Capollo had a lot to say about this victory. “The England team performed. All the players played very well,” Capello said after two well-worked goals by John Terry and Steven Gerrard proved too much for the Americans at Wembley. “In every situation we chose the best way to play. The first 50 minutes the USA pressed a lot, but we played good football. Today the team played like in training. The pressing and tackling were very good. It’s another step forward.”

Capello saluted Terry’s effort. “I am very happy for him and for the England team,” he said. “He played a very good game. He is a leader for Chelsea and when he plays with the national team.

FIFA bans Iraq from international football

May 31

According to the PressTV release on the 27th of May, FIFA has announced that it is banning Iraq from International Football! This is in response to the decision of the US installed Iraqi Govt. to abolish all of the Sports Organisations in Iraq where the government desolved Iraqi National Olympics committee, Soccer Association and others.

This policy runs contrary to FIFA and the International Football in which Sports and Politics must be separated. This is a huge blow to Iraqi sports lovers. The Iraqi team will suffer the most being that they won the Asian Cup after defeating Saudi Arabia. It is a good team to lose just because of politics. What’s more, if the situation doesn’t resolve itself, Iraq will not be able to play any of the International games leading to the 2010 World Cup due to the myopic Iraqi puppet government.

If the Baghdad government does not respond fashionably and the FIFA suspension is not lifted, which is only if the government annuls its decree, all of Iraq’s fixtures would become forfeits, handing Australia a free ride to the next stage.

World Superbike Salt Lake City.

May 30

The build up for this race has reached a fevered pitch, this being the first Superbike event in US soil in over four years. Australian Troy Bayliss will attempt to build on his already imposing world Superbike lead when the championship returns to America on June 1 on a new and untried circuit, Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.

Superbike USA Salt Lake City

Originally conceived as a ‘playground’ for the owner of the NBA’s Utah Jazz, Larry H. Miller, the circuit, near Salt Lake City, eventually morphed into a project of massive proportions, and was opened in 2006 at a cost of over $100m. Since then, it’s hosted a number of major two and four-wheel events, including a round of the American Superbike Championship.

Now, world Superbike has signed a three-year deal with Miller, and Bayliss (Ducati), for one, is looking forward to the fresh challenge.

No superbike fan can miss this event, with the winners probably going down into the record books.

The four hour event will be aired Live on Zee Sports India at 6:00 a.m. IST on the 1st of June, 2008.

If you miss the race, then there will be several reruns on the same day (2:00 pm/9 p.m.) as well as the following days. But it is no fun in watching a taped race is there!

Tri Series- Selectors announce squad today

May 30

The wise men of Indian cricket today announced the squad for the upcoming trination series in Bangladesh and the Asia cup in Pakistan. Uncapped Yusuf Pathan and Pragyan Ojha have been rewarded for their super performances in the IPL with a place in the 15-member Indian squad. The squad that was selected in Mumbai this afternoon, will be led by MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh will be his deputy. Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan requested not to be considered for selection. Former captains Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly failed to make it to the one-day side once again, while Dinesh Karthik and Munaf Patel, who were part of the side that won the CB series in Australia, were also excluded from the team.

Pathan has scored 334 runs at an average of 27.83 from 13 innings with three fifties in the Twenty20 tournament. He also recorded the fastest half-century off 21 balls against the Hyderbad team. The handy all-rounder, who is turning out from the Shane Warne-led Rajasthan team, has also taken five wickets with his off-spin. The spinner has claimed 11 wickets at an average of 25.81 in the tournament.

Bryant leads Lakers past Spurs and into NBA finals

May 30

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers dispatched the defending champions the San Antonio Spurs, and they’re now headed to the NBA finals for the first time in four years. Bryant scored 17 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter, and the Lakers rallied from an early 17-point deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs 100-92 on Thursday night and win the Western Conference finals in five games.

A basket by Lamar Odom gave the Lakers an 83-76 lead with 5:40 remaining, but a 3-pointer by Brent Barry and a basket by Tony Parker drew the Spurs within two points. Manu Ginobili missed a 3-pointer that could have given San Antonio the lead before Bryant’s jumper with 3:33 to play made it 85-81. A foul shot by Tim Duncan drew the Spurs within three, but two more baskets by Bryant made it 89-82 with 1:47 to play, and the Spurs weren’t closer than five points after that.
Los Angeles will face either the Pistons or Boston Celtics, who lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference final 3-2, with Game 6 in Detroit tonight (Tomorrow morning in India). The Lakers and Celtics have not met in the final since 1987. Either way who ever the Lakers face in the NBA final, it promises to be an exciting one and DR. Whites cant wait for the series to get underway.

Trination Series: India, Pakistan and Bangladesh ODI cricket clash.

May 30

With the number of IPL matches that have been shown in the past month, a lot of us have got a little sick of the quick form of the game. One can hardly remember any of the matches if at all. To bring some sanity to the cricket world, there is a Trination ODI series, between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

A mini series with just four matches spread over 4 days, three very powerful teams compete for the title. India of course is a strong contender. All the players are in full form and are ready to strike. Pakistan also has a strong lineup including Afridi and Misbah. And while Bangladesh isn’t strong on paper, they did show their might at the World Cup last year.

Neo Cricket will be covering these matches Live for Indian viewers. All matches start at 2:30 p.m. IST.

1st ODI: 2.30 PM on 8th June – Bangladesh vs Pakistan
2nd ODI: 2.30 PM on 10th June – India vs Pakistan
3rd ODI: 2.30 PM on 12th June – Bangladesh vs India
Final: 2.30 PM on 14th June 2008.

Formula One: Grand Prix Du Canada. The race goes to Canada.

May 28

The Grand Prix of Monaco 2008 is said to be one of the most interesting and dramatic races in recent memory. After McLaren’s whitewash in Monte Carlo last season, few were predicting a Ferrari victory in this year’s race. However, all that changed after the red cars locked out the front row on Saturday. What no one could have predicted, however, was how just how unpredictable Sunday’s race would be.

On a day when it all went wrong for Ferrari, with both team and drivers admitting mistakes. Ferrari’s Massa looked in control in the wet early stages, but gradually this one slipped away from him.

Things went wrong for Raikkonen even before the start when a wheel location problem put Ferrari beyond the three-minute warning signal on the grid and ultimately resulted in a drive-through penalty that dropped him from second place on the 13th lap. Thereafter he was running fifth, a long way behind Sutil, when the second safety car threw him a lifeline. He muffed that by losing control exiting the tunnel when the race went live again on lap 68, and took his nose off again on the Force India. Ninth just about said it all for the Finn, as he lost his championship lead.

So at the checkered flag it was a jubilant Hamilton from Robert Kubica then Massa with Australian Mark Webber fourth, continuing his good run of points finishes this year. All in all it was a great race which saw Massa slip up again and Hamilton regaining the lead in the 2008 Championship.

Auto Racing: IndyCar 225 at Milwaukee, USA.

May 28

This weekend, the IndyCar Series is at The Milwaukee Mile for the ABC Supply/A.J. Foyt 225. In the four seasons that the IndyCar Series has raced at Milwaukee, the Indy 500 winner has finished second three times - Buddy Rice (2004), Sam Hornish Jr. (2006) and Dario Franchitti (2007).

Last year marked the first time that the IndyCar Series race at Milwaukee immediately followed the Indianapolis 500, although historically this will be the 51st time that Milwaukee has followed Indianapolis. Eight drivers have been able to pull the Indianapolis-Milwaukee double, including four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt.

The last driver to win Indianapolis and Milwaukee in the same year was Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000. The last driver to double up in the same series was Al Unser Jr., in 1994.

The IndyCar 225 race at Milwaukee will be aired Live on ESPN India on 2nd June, at 1:30 a.m.
