MotoGP Italy: Home boy Rossi defends his title at Mugello.

ESPN: Valentino Rossi extended his lead in the MotoGP championship after a commanding win at his home Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.

Rossi has won every Grand Prix of the MotoGP era at Mugello and made it seven in a row at the historic circuit with a dominant display aboard his Fiat Yamaha. With team-mate Jorge Lorenzo crashing out of sixth place, Rossi now leads Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa by 12 points as he searches for a sixth title - and a first since 2005.

The 29-year-old has now won the last three races of the season to put him in pole position to regain his crown after a difficult few years. Reigning champion Casey Stoner was 4.8 seconds back from Rossi on his Marlboro Ducati ahead of Pedrosa, while British hope James Toseland put in another excellent display to claim sixth place on his Tech 3 Yamaha.

Rossi said: “It’s a great feeling as always to win my home Grand Prix. I have a lot of fans here and all my friends and a lot of family were here to see it. It is a great circuit, one of my favourites, and the bike was fantastic.”

MotoGP will have its next showdown at Catalunya, Spain on 8th June, at 2:30 pm on Ten Sports India.
